UrbanHikr is an online lifestyle magazine that promotes satisfying and healthy outdoor trail experiences for busy people who live and work in cities. It:

  • Provides the technical foundation needed to enhance confidence in the outdoors
  • Encourages aesthetic appreciation, social enjoyment, and personal challenge
  • Encourages outdoor activity by sharing adventures and providing motivational ideas
  • Reviews and recommends clothing and equipment that can help make the trail experience safer and more enjoyable
  • Entertains by sharing interesting information from around the web

We believe that regular hiking can provide the foundation of aerobic conditioning, weight management, and strengthening that everyone needs. Spending time in the outdoors also has a stress-lowering effect, boosts mood, and replenishes the soul, counteracting the frantic lives that we live at the office. And if we go with others, the social effect can further enhance the benefits to our health.

With over 70% of adults in the US now overweight and with the cost of healthcare skyrocketing because of our sedentary lifestyles, there’s never been a better time to get out there and hike. It’s inexpensive, accessible, and a low-risk form of recreation, so let’s do ourselves a favor and get out on the trail!

About us

I’m Mark Beresford, the Managing Editor of UrbanHikr. I started hiking in high school and it’s been a constant theme throughout my life, which has given me immense satisfaction and contributed to my overall good health.

It’s always amazed me that I can live so close to nine million people and still see so few people hiking the trails that are only a short drive away. Yes, it’s nice that the trails are quiet, but I’d honestly rather see these amazing resources being used and enjoyed by many more people.

I look forward to meeting you out on the trail!
